Hey chaps,
I decided to teach myself how to mod some of RWR by fiddling with Matricaria's Balance Rethink.
Lazy people can skip the next two paragraphs.
After 5 days, I've rebalanced spawning for every gun, changed the attributes of some, and altered a third of the support calls, along with a large number of other changes. My mod does not feel like the original in any way. A few elements of the original mod remain, for example the Specialist soldier class.
Considering the RWR modding scene (and maybe the RWR scene in general) has quietened down a lot since release, I'm here to ask a few questions: 1) Is there any interest in me releasing the mod once I've finished? and 2) Because it was once the Balance Rethink mod, would I need to contact Matricaria directly for permission to release, or is crediting him enough?
Here's the gist of what I've managed to put together. I had no real starting goal with this mod, but I feel like it fulfills a niche which hasn't really been explored yet in RWR mods. The name in the subject isn't final.
I also have no idea how to use BBCode (yet?), so don't ask me to do that cool thing where you click "spoiler' and it expands into a submenu.
- Designed to make the quick match mode more fun. Not intended to be realistic or sensible in any way.
- All weapons and gear unlock by 11500 xp. Also intended to be played with a higher than usual XP/RP rate.
- All rare weapons can be obtained in the armory, and you can respawn with them, with the exception of a couple.
- Includes a support call which drops 64 men.
- Includes a support call which drops 42,000 dollars and a (balanced!) grenade minigun.
- Regular AI are much stupider now, while mid to high tier AI are much more intelligent. Minibosses can cut swathes through the rank-and-file troops.
- Rare weapons such as the F2000, Javelin, Microgun, and friends show up relatively frequently in the hands of high-tier AI.
- Mortars, MGs, and cover are deployed in huge amounts by the AI, leading to genuine entrenchment and fortification of positions.
- Privates have a much harder time surviving on the battlefield, but once they rank up they become an awe-inspiring force.
- AI constantly calls in for reinforcements. You'd think this would ruin everything, but I spent a while balancing it so that there's lots of new troops coming in, so it's not impossible to overwhelm the enemy.
- I have never experienced a stalemate playing this mod. As I like playing RWR Singleplayer, this is a huge bonus for me.
In short, it's silly and it's ridiculous, but I haven't had this much fun in a very long time.
I've attached a picture of what 20 minutes of attack on a single target does for the terrain. Let me know if you're interested in a release.
