Actually, It'd be cool if cars could be used as weak, impromptu transports. Perhaps make them vulnerable to everything (Bullets in the engine tend to make things work a little less than perfect, and a grenade is likely to tear a car to shreds,) but make them zippy so that you could quickly move up to 5 (Counting the driver) soldiers in one vehicle for fast transport. I'd imagine that by the time heavier vehicles are implemented they'll rarely be used, but it's a nice alternative that could make for some interesting tactics, and really adds another dimension to the game.
I'm just concerned it would look too intensely, soul-crushingly lame and retarded to see groups of soldiers riding into battle in bright-red civilian 4x4s.

One of my biggest problems with stuff like this is that cars don't tend to explode by just shooting at them. Believe it or not, cars aren't made out of nitroglycerin. Have you ever seen a car accident? It would be horrible if collisions caused an explosion, let alone a small projectile hitting it at high speed.
I've no problem with an actual explosion capable of destroying a car... but you have to understand the car itself does not explode, but the C4, rocket, or whatever that caused the explosion would create shrapnel and other nasty things from the car. Gameplay wise the distinction wouldn't really matter so much, but it would make cars pretty decent cover in a pinch until people start shooting HEDP rockets.
Since when did the game become realistic enough to take that stuff seriously?
