You know how there are random names? Well, currently everyone is a clone, with different names. What would be cool, and great for future game modes (Cough zombies cough) is random character models. Selected from a database of models, each NPC or player has a chance of being a different model! For example, in the future zombie mode/mod, this will be useful so you don't have cloned zombies trying to eat your brains. Also great for mods that need to incorporate multiple characters, based on the theme.
I look forward to something like this. It would greatly improve aesthetics and modders.

This could be really cool. Some soldiers could have Berets, others could be wearing Boonie Hats, or Backpacks. Even stuff like varrying BDU styles (Rolled up or down sleeves, overcoats, just shirts,) would be really cool, and offer some nice visual diversity, and could later allow modders to easily implement various styles of characters.

EXACTLY my idea. :3

I might even make a modpack for this when implemented. It would be fun.... like spriting but in 3D! :D

Well there's two things I've thought of.

First thought, the kind of outfit you have could be based on the weapon you have equiped. Having suppressed weapons could give you a character model that more easily blends into the terrain somehow, and perhaps has boonie caps or berets as suggested. Having a machinegun of some description could give your guy bandoleers (rule of cool) or combat vests with large pockets (presumably for keeping boxes of ammunition). People with assault rifles could get the regular combat vest with maybe a light backpack of some sort. Shotgunners could get... well, a bandolier (would be more appropriate than a machinegunner having one).

On the other hand, the kind of equipment you have could be customized in a typical character customization screen during or before a game starts and remains persistent, with the option of having random parts every time you spawn.

I think that having a customizability menu that lets your choose what your guy looks like will rock. so you can change head gear, body, arms, and legs to your liking.

* customization menu not in scope of RWR 1.0
* specific soldier models based on weapons might come, but not too sure about it.. picking up a weapon which will change your whole outfit seems a little out of place
* support for multiple faction-specific models is coming

What about splitting the soldier-model in single parts. Legs/Arms/Head/Body/Shoes/Head/Backpack and have it assemble randomly?
