While I was last playing RWR (In the middle of a particularly chaotic battle,) I was thinking about what would make the battles more exciting visually. Suddenly the idea hit me: Tracers! Glowing rounds that light up the battlefields (And light unlucky Soldiers on fire.) Something like this would make playing as a Machine Gunner far more fun and rewarding, and would also make deaths a little more varied on the battlefield. Basically, every 5th round would be a tracer round that gives off a bright glow, and would light any enemies it hits on fire. However, the risky part is the fact that the tracer fire would give away the position of the shooter, making them a bigger, more noticable target.

Another (Slightly related,) idea was adding proper bullet physics. Things such as ricochets and overpenetration of soldiers would add to the chaotic nature of a battlefield situation, and would make things such as assaulting an enemy MG a more dangerous, chance affair. This could also make urban combat more realistic, and would make taking cover even more imperitive when a stray bullet could kill you.

Just a few suggestions regarding the tracer rounds used in the game.

I think it would be nice if the tracer rounds were colored depending on which team fired them. Currently most NATO rounds have an orange/red red tracer, while Warsaw pact ones have green tracers. (At least, from what I understand) Just to give an example. Tracers can be many different colors depending on the chemicals used, in case you decide to just make up your own weapons and factions =p

Secondly I don't think that every round fired should have a clearly visible tracer. Typically every three or five rounds are a tracer, and if you still -really- want the tracer effect on non-tracers, you could easily have a very subdued white/grey 'tracer' streak. In addition, sometimes the last few rounds of a magazine are tracers, letting the soldier know they need to reload.

Third, tracer rounds should provide limited illumination at night.

If they are added, suppressed weapons will never have any tracers of any kind. That pretty much defeats their porpoise.

Lastly, ricochets, even if they cause no damage. Tracer rounds deflecting off of stuff looks cool, go look up a video of a minigun.

EDIT: Maybe only allow tracers rounds to ignite flammable liquids, aside from other explosions of course.

This in conjunction with the nighttime/daytime firing effects I suggested elsewhere.

Ricochets would just look sweet, especially in conjunction with tracers. Here's some proof.

Just a note, at higher FPS the tracers should look more like a ball of light, while lower FPS should make them look like the streaks you often see in videos.

It would also be very impressive to witness, say, a tank shell (If and when they're implemented) ricocheting off another tank's armor, and taking out a few riflemen off to the side. The possibilities for this would be awesome.
Also, your notes on tracer appearance are spot on (I've seen and fired them from an automatic weapon in person,) and it would be great to see that modeled realisticly in this game.
