Hello!

I bought this awesome game yesterday and I'm stuck with it now, I love how mod friendly it is.

Well, as the topic might have spoiled, I really, really think this game needs flamethrowers! (Yes I searched and did find a year old topic about it - no need to necro)
I'm thinking when the vehicles come, we could perhaps have flamethrowers on tanks and such (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame_tank), and ofc the good ol' hand held flamethrower.

Would be Ideal to clear trenches with!

So have the awesome developer of RwR said anything about fire and such?

Best Regards!
Newbie Dibuk

I have to admit I haven't thought about adding flamethrowers in the game at all.

While it would be a feasible thing to add, it does seem quite a big task albeit a fun one. Tweaking to get a nice flame effect, completely different behavior for the "projectiles", burning animations for soldiers, the flames should preferably stick to all sorts of things like trees and leaves, etc.

There's some hope, but I won't go making promises about it; certainly not a short term task unfortunately.

Holy cow, you are the developer right?

Now I won't even try to pretend I know how hard all of that would be to add (I only have rudimentary programming experience - lot's of modding though) but what you said would be the ulimate, real deal, flamethrower.

...I don't think a "shockwave/area" kinda damage would be at all easy to do now - I guess you have "bullets" flying from the grenades like shrapnel and thats what causing the damage - no "shockwave"?
If thats the case, would it not be possible to tweek the bullets speed and trajectory to lobb them on to targets - like a big bullethose with slow moving "bullets" with sparkely effect and smoke on them? Kinda crude I know, but that might be "easy" to do.

Bah, whatever, I love the game non the less!

Also English is not my native language, pardon any mistakes

Man i woud learn scripting just to get flamethrowers in this game it would be so FFFUUUUNNNNN and it would also add some more colour that this game realy needs, cause i would just love to walk through a black terrain with small fires all over the place

well just to bring down the mood :D the part I hate about flame throwers is that the flame thrower was rarely used in combat ever since WWII and even then, it was used sparingly. It's pretty unrealistic to see soldiers with flamethrowers running after soldiers with guns because that's just not the right way to use them.

Yes I understand the tactical value of an entrenchment clearing weapon but honestly, that's all it was good for. It was vulnerable to combustion and leaking and was heavy and restricted movement. Considering the modern combat motif of the game, I would not have hand held flame throwers because it simply is unrealistic to the extreme. It could be implemented just so that WWII and other mods could incorporate a flame thrower like weapon but I personally don't see a reason to have it in the vanilla game.

well you could make it very rare and im not gunna be chasing people down :P
(PS its ok to have some unrealistic stuff in the game)
but it would be GREAT for flanking (maybe make it an option that you can disable?)
Also it would make it easy to have flame tanks (WICH PASIK WILL PUT IN OR ILL KILL SOMEONE)

A lot of people on this forum are firm believers of the rule of cool. "The limit of the willing suspension of disbelief for a given element is directly proportional to the element's awesomeness."

I'm more of a realism/semi-realism guy myself. Flamethrowers could be possible if they were done like they are in Men of War, with somewhat decent range but with the possibility of exploding and killing nearby friendlies. Plus, people like setting things on fire, so...

(As for tanks, I'm really hoping there aren't any MBT's or anything, the heaviest thing I'd want to see is an M2A2 or a BMP3 or something, and even that's kinda pushing it. I don't know how susceptible to fire modern vehicles are compared to WWII ones.)

I know this will make a lot of you guys question my nerdiness but I never thought flame throwers were cool :) *cowers in corner

haha but once again, this is a personal preference. I am but one among many and that was just my opinion. Seems most people want flame throwers.

I do hope the heaviest vehicles will be maybe a light tank for both sides as an antivehicle weapon but not a flame tank.

I am on your side for this. The design of the game doesn't suit well with flamethrower, except if you want to make a flamethrower which can shoot over 1/2 of the screen at least which would be very far away... Flamethrower would be only good on small distances or as a defensive weapon but if you want to fight on an open field with a flamethrower then good luck :D

About the vehicles, I would see an APC as heaviest vehicle for now. A heavy tank would be hard to balance and you'd need destructible environment to make it look halfway realistic, if an APC doesnt shoot holes in a building it wouldn't look that weird.
