Go to your Steam app folder for RWR, usually something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RunningWithRifles, rename the existing rwr_game.exe to something else to keep it as a backup, and then copy the newly downloaded rwr_game.exe in this location.

Run RWR, via Steam or directly from the exe, doesn't matter, and try to connect to InvasionUSA. When it has been in that weird state for a few seconds, just quit. Then please post the latest rwr_game.log.
