Thought I'd test the water for a mod with humans against some as yet undecided enemy which only had a melee attack. I guess building an initial basic one would act as a template for any sort of different opponents due the the simplicity of the game at this point. Some examples:

Humans Vs Werewolves
Humans Vs Zombies
Humans Vs Raptors
Humans Vs Aliens

I've done the werewolves one before in DF is probably what I'll try first.

I'll probably dig around with the gamefiles soon to see how easy implementation would be.

Might not be that easy quite yet. Weapons are hard coded, AI doesn't know even how to use the knife i.e. melee. AI would also behave rather poorly as they currently rely on the fact that they have rifles and unlimited ammo.

At this point for creating new models, you'd need to find your own voxel modeling tools and do some programming to come up with a conversion to get your voxel model into game's xml-based format. It's doable and the format is self-explanatory mostly, but not a nice task to do I'm sure.

The stuff you are after, should be a lot easier to achieve when I end up making an attack dog AI behavior one of these days, I'd suppose.

Also some day, I might publish the voxel tool I'm using, but at this stage it's highly annoying to use (IK-tool suddenly stops working requiring application restart, random crashes, there's no text in the UI, cryptic keyboard shortcuts etc) which would put off a lot of potential modding people, even if it is somewhat effective.

That's exactly what i expected the situation to be. I'm used to playing the waiting game when modding to get the results i want so that's fine (I've waited around 2 years now for DF with at least one more on the horizon). Just thought I'd get a post down to see if there was any interest.

The funny thing is that I was actually going to ask if someone could do this. Lol.

Hey I think this is a good idea, and since the AI can use the knife with the recent update I think this mod could be made into something awsome! Go for it dude :D

There's still a lot of stuff that has to be added/opened up before this can be attempted so it'll be a while yet.

As a base you could mod one side to only use knife, strip their weapons AI, have them gather in packs and try to engage in melee... and go from there no?

I suppose you can already mod all weapons out by making the mag size 0, but the AI will still behave as if it would be able to reload and shoot. You also can't control weapon usage per faction, so you'd lose the weapons yourself too.

Moreover, the AI can't be scripted / re-programmed currently.
