Hi!

I'm loving RwR. I was given a great in-game training session the other day when I looked for a server online and found one with just one person in it. They kindly took the time to shoot the sh_t out of me and then explain what I was doing wrong, how to use cover, and so on. Very welcoming and I'm sure I was a more worthy opponent by the end of it.

That being said, I'm finding the 'dog tags' achievement / killing spree / facepalm icons that pop out on the right side of the screen a little jarring considering the rest of the game's design and ambiance. You could say it's a little too GOURANGA! for the setting.

I was thinking that sticking with the mechanic that announces promotions -- that pops up in the bottom right -- to announce player achievements or defeats -- would be more in keeping with the game's restrained look and feel.

One idea was that the player could be 'mentioned in dispatches' with a telegram (with morse code sound effects?) scrolling out from the bottom right hand corner of the screen, fading toward the bottom centre so the ammo / weapon / secondary / mortar display is not obscured.

The French mentions from WWI (ref. above wiki article) would work well, maybe with a brief bugle reveille as an accompaniment.

Keep the facepalm / stupid death 'achievement', but wrap it in some black humor 'selflessly gave his life for his unit... again.'

Thanks for reading, take it with a grain of salt, and thanks for making a great game. Off to hassle friends to vote for it in Greenlight.

Alex

hi Alex an welcome to RWR!

Most of the achievements are pretty much final, so they won't change much in style. The animation, the position and size may change until the final release (I think those are maybe a bit too big). Also the requirements for the badges will be made harder and for some achievements there will be ribbons (as there will be much more achievements).

Have a nice day,
Jack

PS: I am the HUD artist responsible for those achievements you don't like too much btw ;)

I wouldn't quite go as far as saying they are pretty much final, actually. I'm pretty sure we had already discussed that the set is currently rather random in style which is uncalled for: blood splats, road signs, skulls, some on badges, some on tags, some without background. I mean, the set has some serious placeholder feel to them currently :)

Until we know better what the awards are really going to be, and how numerous and if they should be e.g. categorized somehow, making the final choice for the overall style won't be easy. I admit I'm looking forward to having them consistent and have more a military feel, which most likely means the humor needs to have a slightly different angle.

Warhawk for the PS3 has a really cool system of ribbons, badges and medals. It also keeps track of tons of stats and I've found myself spending hours just looking at how I stack up. It even keeps track of your stats over time in graph form. Here's a website outlining the badgers, medals and ribbons: http://www.warhawkstats.com/ These are all tied with unlocks (only cosmetic).

I know that would be a ton of work and I would much rather see a super polished game than a fleshed out stat tracking system, but BOTH would be great, of course.
