Post subject:  Having Trouble Understanding Maps

Hey everyone, I'm just looking for some general coaching here. I've never done any modding before, but I am trying to make my first map, just a placeholder for me to play with as I learn how to use the tools available to me.

However, I can't seem to get the basics down. I am currently using the "How to create maps" section of the Wiki to coach me along, but I am missing something. When I try to load my test map, it stops at 1% and crashes because I am sure something important is missing. Can anyone help me determine what files, processes, or goofs are responsible?

I included a picture of my test map folder

Hi,

Nice to see someone trying his luck on making a custom map :)
Hard to tell what you did wrong but link your rwr_game.log (after crash - you can find it in %appdata%/running with rifles/) and the objects.svg file and we'll have a look.

Feel free to join the Discord community if you have some more questions but for map making I can assist you here as well.

Thank you for the response! Here's the two files.

The Objects file is definitely not correct. I am having a tough time grasping everything at once.

I am trying to upload both files, but I am told .svg and .log are not allowed. Is there any way around this?

I've included what I believe is the relevant portion of the RWR_Game file

don't you have dropbox or something? I don't know the allowed files but else you might just ZIP those files. But best would be to host it externally (like dropbox) and pasting a link there.

Sorry about that! I don't often share files, I didn't even consider using Drive.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

That should do it.

Well, you have many important things missing from objects.svg like bases and spawn points.

I recommend that you start to modify the tutorial map and dont start from scratch as that is too difficult.

Thats how i make maps. I pick some map that suits my purposes. Then you can modify the layers and remove useless stuff.

Post subject:  Re: Having Trouble Understanding Maps

I feel like my map is somehow way too large? I put in spawn points and bases (not sure how to make them into sublayers yet) but they are absolutely miniscule and you have to zoom in super far to see them. I tried to make the dirt layer 2048x2048 because I read that is the map size, but I think maybe I misinterpreted or am handling something incorrectly.

I will just go back to editing the tutorial map, but at some point I have to figure out how to do it from scratch.

I am hoping to create a free-for- all Battle Royale mode eventually. I have been playing Playerunknown's Battlegrounds a bit lately, and thought about how much I would love that style in RWR

So why not use tutorial (or any other) map as a template?
Just make copy of the map and then modify as you want. Thats how i make my noob maps. It helps you over many problems.

That's what I am going to do now. But I'm still trying to sort out a few details even if I do that.

So to make sure I do this right, when I've finished making changes:

1)save each alpha layer as a PNG, in grayscale, to the map file
2)Run Process.Bat
3)Run Post-process.Bat
4)....

Do I need to run any others first?
